Seguramente tendrán que pasar varios meses hasta que tu hijo mayor se sienta seguro, pero llega un momento en que casi todos los niños asimilan bien el cambio. Muchas veces los amigos, los vecinos y los parientes llenan de regalos al recién nacido. Una vez más, puede ser buena idea tener a mano unos cuantos juguetes, nuevos pero no muy caros, para evitar los celos del hijo mayor. Pero si, más allá de regalos, les das más amor y comprensión, seguro que acabará superando lo que quizá sea un periodo difícil para él.
No te sorprenda si tu hijo empieza a mostrar una regresión en algunos aspectos cruciales de su desarrollo. Un niño que ya no utilice pañales puede volver a mojar la cama, por ejemplo: otro puede volver a chuparse el dedo o dormir mal. Quizá notes más celos por parte de tu hijo mayo cuando estás alimentando al bebé. Durante este periodo, tranquiliza al mayor diciéndole que lo quieres tanto como a su hermano y que nadie lo reemplazara en tu corazón.
Si habías pensado cambiar de habitación a tu hijo mayor o crees que ya es hora de que pase de la cuna a la cama, hazlo antes de que nazca el bebé. Así se irá acostumbrando y no asociará la nueva situación con la llegada del bebé.
Según se acerque el final del embarazo, no te sorprendas si tu hijo trata de llamarte la atención o se vuelve particularmente dependiente. Muchos niños perciben que algo va a cambiar cuando ven que la madre aumentar de tamaño o cuando oyen conversaciones sobre la llegada del bebé. Durante este tiempo, ofrécele cariño y apoyo e inclúyelo en todos los preparativos. Y recuerda que, si bien la llegada de un hermano afecta a los mayores de forma predecible, cada niño es único, y la manera de reaccionar del tuyo dependerá en gran medida de su personalidad…
